Susan Martinez
Susan Martinez was born in the Dominican Republic and raised in New Jersey. In 1987, she earned her Doctor in Medicine degree from La Universidad Catolica Madre y Maestra in the Dominican Republic, and thereafter became a licensed general practitioner. She practiced as an M.D. in the Dominican Republic for two years, and was appointed the Director of the Clinica Rural de Sabana Iglesias. She is eligible for the Medical Boards in the USA.
Upon relocating to South Florida, Ms. Martinez was hired in 1993 as a Preauthorization Coordinator by a prominent Florida managed care organization. Her responsibilities included reviewing and evaluating requests for medical services and using established criteria and clinical expertise in determining medical necessity in accordance with the terms and conditions of the applicable Subscriber Contract. In this position, she also utilized her extensive knowledge of all areas of medicine and her intimate knowledge of the various Subscriber Contracts, reviewing requests for medical services from numerous medical specialties for authorization for both out-patient and in-patient services. Because of her expertise, she was promoted within that same year to Preauthorization Supervisor, which she maintained through 1995. In December of 1995, Ms. Martinez was again promoted within the organization, this time to the position of Preauthorization Manager for their new centralized statewide Preauthorization Call Center, where she was responsible for supervising approximately forty employees who processed all requests for medical necessity on a statewide basis. In addition to her responsibilities in managing the Preauthorization Call Center, she also participated in numerous company projects related to the future operational aspects and direction of the Company and was intimately involved with the Plan's Grievance and Appeal process utilized by Subscribers and Providers to contest denied claims.
In 2000, Ms. Martinez joined the Law Offices of Steven M. Ziegler, P.A. She assists the Firm's managed care clients in defending benefits and malpractice cases. In this capacity, she reviews medical records, prepares medical chronologies, analyzes provider and member files, reviews Plan decisions of medical necessity, locates expert witnesses, researches the various medical issues, and provides overall assistance in the defense of the Firm's many managed care clients.
Ms. Martinez is also actively involved in the community. She conducts workshops for personal growth and transformation, which includes a leadership program to coach and assist workshop participants in achieving their goals. She is also a former President and Treasurer of Ministry, Unity en Español, and continues to volunteer to the ministry, which includes teaching children-adolescents in Sunday School. Ms. Martinez is fluent in Spanish.
